This thesis intends to study the correlation between English learning motivation and learning strategies through a questionnaire survey conducted on two groups of students from the top and the bottom in each class in Qiushi Middle School in Hohhot. The students are divided into the top and the bottom according to their grades in three major examinations of the first term. The two groups of the students are supposed to hold different motivations and therefore adopt different learning strategies. The analysis of this comparative study's result can show whether learners'preference for certain types of learning strategies is partially determined by their particular type of motivation.Chapter One shows the importance and necessity of the research both in theory and in practice. At the same time, the purpose of the research is mentioned.Chapter Two, Three and Four give an overall description of the present situation of this research area and provides a clear, multi-dimensional definition and classification for English learning motivation and learning strategies. This part lays a sound theoretical foundation for this research and meanwhile puts forward the objectives and hypotheses of the study.Chapter Five reports an empirical study, which has been conducted by the author in the hope of testing the correlation between learning motivation and learning strategies. This part elaborates in detail how this research is designed and conducted.Chapter Six analyzes the results of the survey. The analysis can be divided into three parts: the overall analysis; the analysis of the motivation and the analysis of the strategy.Chapter Seven reports the conclusion and major significance of this study.
