In the outlying districts of Guizhou Province, English listening teaching has been neglected for a long period of time. Besides, the traditional listening teaching mode lacks guidance to students about effective listening strategies. What teachers focus on are the outcomes of listening, rather than listening itself, product rather than process, since success is usually measured by correct answers. Such listening teaching mode neglects the students and their language creativity, and can't meet our country's needs for social development. Therefore, in the process of listening instruction, effective strategy training should be carried out in middle school.This paper takes up the training of listening strategies as its topic to study.The present writer first reviewed the literature concerning listening comprehension, listening strategy and strategy training research, then worked out a three-stage strategy-training model based on Anderson's theory. And then, the author made an experiment of English listening training on two classes of grade one in Zhijin No.2 Middle School. Before the experiment, all the students took an English listening comprehension test and z-test showed there were no apparent differences between the two classes. Then the students of Class One received listening strategy training (including metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies and social strategies), whereas those students of Class Two did not have listening training.This experiment lasted 20 weeks, and it can be divided into three stages:The first stage (1st -3rd week): understanding the appointed listening strategies and improving students'strategy consciousness.The second stage (4th-12thweek):teacher showed how to use these strategies and students practiced using them under teacher's guidance.The third stage (13th–20th week): consolidation and expansion of strategy using.After four-and-a-half-month's experiment, all the students took another English listening comprehension test, and z-test showed that experimental group's achievement is much more than control group's.That means:(1) Systematic listening strategy training on ordinary high school students can improve their listening ability.(2) The three-stage strategy training is effective in No.2 Middle School in Zhijin County.
