Affective education is an important facet of quality education. In the new standards of the senior high school English curriculum, affective factors are regarded as more important. However, influenced by the test-oriented system, many senior high school teachers are still used to teaching English as knowledge. In class, they pay too much attention to explaining language points, and students are busy copying what the teacher says. Students are in a passive position during the whole period of classroom teaching and their enthusiasm is discouraged. In addition, students have few chances to practice the language, so their positive affect towards English is badly hindered and their affect is depressed. Students have little enthusiasm in learning English and many of them have even given up learning English.Affective teaching is a teaching approach by which teachers take cognitive factors and affective factors into account at the same time so as to perfect the goal of teaching and produce better results during the teaching process. In order to improve the present teaching and learning situation, affective teaching provides relevant theories and methods through real teaching activities in which both affective factors and cognitive factors are considered. According to those theories, in the course of English teaching, teachers should be good at stimulating students'initiative of learning English and help them to form effective learning strategies and positive affect and attitudes towards English.Based on the current state of English teaching in senior high school, this thesis discusses how to carry out affective teaching in senior high school English teaching. First affective theories, affective teaching theories, relevant educational psychological theories and English teaching theories are synthesized, and then attempts are made to combine these theories with English teaching practice and some specific ways to carry out affective teaching in senior high school English teaching are provided.
