| English, as a foreign language, has been widely learned throughout China in the past thirty years or so. English is becoming more and more important in the international communication due to the globalization. Students from the primary school to college have to learn English well. In the course of teaching English, researchers and educators have gradually realized that the development of students'cognitive abilities is not enough, for the development of affect can ensure students'cognition and the whole-person development. That is, learning cognition and affect are not separated from each other in English teaching in China, which attaches too much importance to cognitive side of language learning while neglecting the function of affective factors. The affective side of learning is not in opposition to the cognitive side. If a student lacks positive emotions, the learning efficiency will be lowered. Not only can affective factors increase the efficiency of students'learning, but also they can promote the development of the students'whole personality. In this paper, some affective factors like anxiety, motivation, self-confidence etc are studied. It is aimed to find out the answers to the questions like: What causes anxiety? What effect can anxiety have on the learners? How to identify anxiety? What classifications does motivation have? How important is motivation to language learners? In addition, some surveys were done using questionnaires to find out and also make students know what causes their anxiety and where their motivations lie in the ESL classroom. And an experiment was done to check whether improved self-confidence, reduced anxiety and enhanced motivation can affect their learning achievements. The questionnaires, interviews and experiment were all done on all or some of the students two classes of the school. Another part of the paper is to put forward some strategies on the basis of the affective factors. All in all, affective education tries to help students develop their full potentials and cooperate well with one another as they are in the ESL classroom and later in life. If teachers can first realize the importance of affective factors in students'language learning and then help students to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses to act with a positive attitude, the students can achieve high efficiency in class and develop the whole personality which is needed to succeed. |
