Purpose: To investigate shadowboxing exercise on the treatment of patients with lubarintervertebral disc protrusion and its related effect mechanism. Methods: 68 patients with the lubar intervertebral disc protrusion were divided into 2groups at random: one is shadowboxing group(n=37), and the other is the comparisongroup (n=31). The comparison group was treated only by the conventional therapy;however, the shadowboxing group took six months' shadowboxing exercises in addition tothe conventional therapy. The clinical symptoms, physical characteristics and nerveconduction velocity of the lower limb are analyzed before and after the experiment, respectively. Results: (1) The result of sit-and-reach test of the shadowboxing group is increased from4.91±2.60 (cm) to 8.30±3.03 (cm), which shows significant difference (p<0.01)between the results of before and after the experiment. However, there is no significantdifference for the comparison group. (2) Before the experiment, the lumbar function ofthe shadowboxing group and comparison group is 7.82±2.13 and 8.09±1.98,respectively, which shows no significant difference (P>0.05) between them. However, thecorresponding lumbar function of them after the experiment is 25.34±6.89 and18.38±5.48, respectively, which indicates there is significant difference (P<0.01)between them. (3) Before the experiment, the sensory nerve conduction velocity of theperoneal nerve for the shadowboxing group and comparison group is 35.74±6.47 and35.55±6.37 m/s, respectively, which shows no significant difference (P>0.05) betweenthem. However, the corresponding sensory nerve conduction velocity of the peroneal nerveafter the experiment is 37.92±5.50 and 35.69±6.85 m/s, respectively, and there issignificant difference (P<0.05) between them. Conclusions: Shadowboxing exercises can help to relax waist muscle, ease muscletension, and increase muscle strength, which will improve the clinical symptoms andphysical characteristics of the lubar intervertebral disc protrusion and the function of theperipheral nerve conduction..
