This thesis is a survey on senior middle school students'English learning motivation. It was conducted in two intact classes with 80 students in Affiliated Middle School to Inner Mongolia Normal University. One class with 42 students was randomly chosen as the experimental class (EC) while the other one with 38 students acted as the comparative class (CC). One purpose of the investigation is to prove the relationship between motivation and English achievement. The other purpose is to examine whether meeting students'deficiency and growth needs can improve the student's learning motivation. The experiment lasted one year. In CC, the teacher-centered classroom teaching was used. But in EC, some ways to motivate students to study English were conducted: create a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere in the classroom, arouse and sustain students'interest by establishing the"Problem Circumstances"and presenting tasks in motivating ways, establish a good relationship between teachers and students, build up the learners'linguistic self-confidence, promote the student's autonomy, and meet the students'growth needs by adopting different kinds of teaching methods flexibly. The result of the posttest showed that the students in EC had great enthusiasm in learning English and their English was greatly improved. What's more, the motivation intensity in EC had increased significantly while the motivation intensity in CC stayed the same. Therefore, the new teaching method could foster students'English learning motivation. The thesis consists of five parts. Part One mainly introduces the importance, necessity of this study. Part Two reviews some language theories on motivation. In this part, the researcher recalls Maslow's theory of hierarchy of needs, Gardner's integrative and instrumental motivation, Deci's intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and William and Burden's three-stage model of motivation. Part Three includes the aims of the investigation, participants, instruments (questionnaire, pretest and posttest included), and experimental procedure. Part Four deals with data analysis and discussion. Part Five is about the conclusion.
