Lead-in, as the first stage of a classroom teaching, is one of the basic and important stages in the English classroom teaching, which is obviously short but can't be underestimated. It is the reason why researchers call it the prelude of English classroom teaching. With an appropriate lead-in, students will be more concentrated, interested in English learning process, desire for deep understanding, and take an active part in English learning, which can form a harmonious learning atmosphere and guarantee efficient teaching. Therefore, English teachers in Senior High School should be good at using various lead-in methods flexibly, make English classes interesting, stimulate and enhance students'intrinsic learning motivation and then students will feel that English learning is a kind of mental share. This thesis, from the angles of Krashen's Second Language Acquisition Theory, Psychological Principle, Esthetic Principle, Pedagogical Principle, etc, mainly discusses the important role of intrinsic motivation in English learning and the significance of lead-in for cultivating intrinsic motivation in English learning. Through an experiment, conducted among eighty students from paralleled classes of Senior One, Zhenan Senior High School in the city of Shangluo from October,2010 to January,2011, the writer firmly believes that an effective lead-in art can stimulate and cultivate students'intrinsic motivation in English learning by analyzing questionnaire and final-term examination achievements. Students'active participation in lead-in can further motivate them to learn English well.We all know that English classroom is the main place of cultivating students' intrinsic motivation. As an old saying goes:"Good beginning is half done." If a teacher is good at attracting students'attention and cultivating their intrinsic motivation at the very beginning of a lesson, students will learn English well and enjoy English learning. Cultivating students'intrinsic motivation depends on a teacher's super teaching art. A teacher should attract students'attention and stimulate students'intrinsic motivation at the beginning of every lesson. Ma Junming stated (1996) that a teacher's lead-in just like a magnet, his teaching should trigger students'interest from the beginning of a new lesson. The writer thinks that a teacher's lead-in skill is vital important for nurturing forces of students'intrinsic motivation in English learning. In classroom teaching, an effective lead-in, to a great extent, means a successful lesson. Lead-in, as the prelude of a lesson, is an art. It demands that a teacher should use his or her language art (including body language art) management art skillfully to create a pleasant situation and make his or her students enjoy English learning. In this stage, a teacher should make full use of different resources, such as multimedia technology, asking question, etc. to introduce a new lesson. Meanwhile, the teaching should be student-centered and develop students' creativity. Teachers can use students'vivid and humorous performance to lead in a new lesson. The teacher just like a guide, lead the students'to participate in learning activity. In short, this thesis aims to help Senior High English teachers to realize the important role of lead-in in senior high school EFL classroom teaching, explore the new methods of Senior High English teaching and enhance the efficiency of classroom teaching.
