Writing is an indispensable part of second language acquisition. As an important language skill, English writing teaching is the weakest chain in English teaching process. No matter for writing strategies or teaching result, people are not satisfied with it. Writing is a process in which students can express themselves effectively according to their own feelings. Their writings must reflect the communicative function. It was in the writing process that students can improve their writing technique and competence. While traditional writing teaching model regards the teacher as the center, the center position of students always is neglected. The learning process of student is replaced by the teaching process of the teacher.According to the reform of education, researchers think that it is necessary to change the present teaching model. Many researchers bring in the cooperative theories based on some American researches in the 1970's. Some Chinese researchers combine the theories with the present situation in middle school and put forward group writing. It has been proved to be effective for improving writing ability of middle school students. The author selected the special individuals as experimental subjects to test the result further.This thesis includes 7 parts:The first part: introduce the importance of English writing in modern times and highlight the request of writing in NMET(National Matriculation English Test). But the distance between the reality and the request is farther. There are some serious problems in English writing teaching, especially in the author's school---National Middle School of Lanzhou. So the author put forward the significance of the study and research questions.The second part: review the research result in foreign countries and China; put forward grouping writing strategy.The third part: introduce the theories of the research: group dynamic theory, need theory and ZPD( Zone of Proximal Development ) theory.The fourth part: introduce the procedure of the research, including experimental subjects, instruments, steps et. Analyze the result of the experiment.The fifth part: get the conclusion of the research: group writing can improve the writing ability of students in national middle school of Lanzhou.The other two parts introduce some implications and limitations in the research. The author hoped to carry out the research further.
