With China entering the WTO, high qualified English personnel are urgently needed in the international market. Learning English is a basic demand for Chinese. English teaching in the rural primary and middle-schools plays a critical role in cultivating high qualified English talents in China where the rural population accounts for about 70% of the total. Rejuvenating education depends on teachers, and improving the quality of teachers depends on training. Giving teachers the professional training is the direct method to improve the quality of teaching. More and more people have realized the importance of the teacher's profession.Teacher training is becoming one of the most prominent issues in education circle. The teachers' in-service period is the longest and most important one in teacher training, and it is very important to promote in-service training in the teacher's profession development. However, the current situation of teacher in-service training is not very satisfactory and there still exist some problems. This thesis aims to reveal the present situation of the rural primary-school English teachers by making an investigation into the present situation of the rural primary-school English teachers in Northern Jiangxi province, explore the causes of the problems and bring up the training strategies as countermeasures against the problems.This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter One "Introduction" first highlights the importance of English education in primary-schools and points out that it is critical to improve English teaching levels of primary-schools in order to improve English education. The author then reviews some previous investigations into the current situation of rural primary-school English teachers and relevant countermeasures and suggestions. Chapter Two presents the real picture of the current situation of rural primary school English teachers in Northern Jiangxi province by using some specific data and points out the significance of rural primary-school English teacher training. Chapter Three discusses the teaching strategies of rural primary-school English teacher training mainly by using the following theories: language learning strategy, critical period hypothesis of language learning and Krashen's input hypothesis. Chapter Four proposes the administrative strategies in rural primary-school English teacher's training from the angle of the education administrative departments. Chapter Five "Conclusion" first offers a brief retrospect to the preceding chapters and brings forward a relevant problem for future research, i.e. how to further strengthen the in-service training of rural primary-school English teachers and improve their English teaching levels.
