Unit teaching has been in development since it is born. Based on absorbing past formed research and experience, and combined with the theory of new curriculum reform, the history, present situation and future is discussed and explored in this paper.In China, unit teaching had played an important role in Chinese teaching. But, during it got a great success, it is now encountering some setbacks. Recollecting all these problems and facing to present situation, this paper advances that the real meaning of unit teaching should be one kind of teaching theory guided by system thought. Unit teaching should not be regarded as a superficial operation. It also should not go wrong way led by one-sided sense of worth of social standard. It should come back to its nature of human's complete development to satisfy new curriculum reform. Leading by system thought, new type of thematic unit should be explored to be suitable for Chinese teaching demands in new historical condition.Some one-sided, wrong understanding and knowledge have been corrected and clarified in this paper. To give more reference and help of unit teaching, several teaching approaches of thematic unit have been designed.
