With the rapid development of Multimedia technology, Computer-based language learning is becoming the trend in foreign language teaching. This new teaching model entailed great influence on teaching methodology and environment. Teacher's roles of"pass on the truth, impart knowledge and solve problems"in the traditional classroom was out of date. Under this circumstance, teachers are required to analyze and reconceptualize their roles. This thesis makes a comparison of the teacher's roles between traditional classroom and computer-based language learning situation under the guidance of current learning theories: Behaviorism, Communicative language teaching approach and Constructivism, and put forward three research questions: 1) In the two situations, what are the roles of teachers? Do the teacher's roles differ greatly in the two universities? 2) How do we look at the relationship between teacher's roles and students'learning strategy? Do the teacher's behaviors have a great influence on students'learning strategy? 3) What is the relationship between teacher's roles and computer's function? Can computer take the place of the teacher in the teaching process? In the research, both quantitative and qualitative methods are applied. The quantitative data are collected from the questionnaire survey of 74 first-year English non-major students among whom 34 students studied in traditional classroom from Qiqihar University and 40 from Ningbo University in Computer-based language learning situation. Besides, interview and classroom observation are employed as qualitative data in order to gain insights into the teacher's roles. The major findings of the research can be summarized as follows:Teachers were playing similar roles in the two situations: traditional and Computer-based language learning.Teacher's roles greatly affected students'learning strategy.Computer was just used to present the PPT document in the Computer-based language learning situation. The computer was not used sufficiently. Teachers still talk most of the class time as a lecturer. The relationship between teacher's role and computer's function need to be adjusted. On the basis of the findings of this research, seven main roles of Computer-based language learning teachers are tentatively set up, discussed and described. They are course designers, lecturers or knowledge transmitters, organizers, assessors, trainers, facilitators and resource-providers, among which some old concepts such as lecturer and organizer have been endowed with new meanings. Then the thesis deals with the relationship between teacher's roles and students'learning strategy. Meanwhile, it also analysizes the computer's function in Computer-based language learning, then detailed discussion is conducted on the relationship between the computer and teachers.Besides, predictions are made about the prospect of Computer-based language learning while further explorations in this field are called for with the suggestions revealed.
