With the development and massively popular application of internet, distance education which is based on internet technology is developing rapidly. Education model based on internet environment adopts innovative methods, which supports students' browsing related teaching resources according to their own situations, then resulting in sharing of excellent educational resources and methods. However, the traditional intelligence teaching system resource lacks the unique knowledge representation framework, posing a problem that all the learning resources are difficult to operate and share in various teaching system. Presently the keyword-based knowledge information retrieval mode of ITS, being very limited in revealing semantics, is difficult to meet the users' actual demands. Teaching system with a lower level of intelligence provides a unified teaching resource for learners, and it is not only difficult to teach according to the student's ability, but also not conducive to individual learning. Therefore it is necessary to bring in a new technological means to improve the current teaching platform.This thesis brings ontology theory into distance education research. Primarily, the background and the significance of the ontology theory are given. Some research has been done to the related theory of ontology theory, then the thesis comes up with several probabilities in the distance education; Secondly, several ontology description language are put forward and compared with each other in various aspects; thirdly, the thesis makes comparison between ontology research methods from home and abroad which points out there limitations. Then a new construction method based on the idea of software project is given. Meanwhile, the thesis introduces the course of ontology database under the teaching technology subject and concludes experience, which contributes to the construction of the ontology in similar field; finally, an original distance teaching platform is introduced and preliminary verification has been made.
