With the development of the globalization, the competition between the countries becomes more and more drastic nowadays. Who can gain the victory in the competition? It depends largely on the edge of owing a large number of human resources. Under this situation, people have realized the importance and emergency of fostering the talents. And the major way to foster the talents is the form of school education. In recent years, our Party, government and the educational administration have attached much importance to the basic education reform, thus, the New Curriculum Standard has been promulgated and new and higher requirements for the teachers are proposed one after another. At the same time, the technology and knowledge are being renewed very quickly in this knowledge and economy age. In order to meet the demand of the society and fulfill the duty of transmitting wisdom and imparting knowledge to students and resolving the doubts fully in teaching, teachers should learn more and more for the purpose of perfecting themselves before and after graduation. From the angle of the teachers, whether they are knowledgeable and capable or not, it will reflect on their teaching. Therefore, classroom teaching skills'training and improvement are the key problem of teacher development. In recent years, the researches that concern with the issue of teaching skills have done a lot and some results are already achieved.Greatly enlightened by the researches of the predecessors, and based on the related theories of cognitive psychology, the media studies'theory and the requirements of the New English Curriculum for the teachers, the present thesis mainly reveals the situation of the classroom teaching skills of English teachers in middle school through a survey of some middle schools in Guilin. The objective of the survey is to get a global understanding of the current situation of the classroom teaching skills of the English teachers and try to provide some referenced suggestions for the teachers'development. The result of the survey shows that most of the English teachers have clear ideas about the teaching skills and they admit their importance. The result of the survey also indicates that how to reasonably and properly combine the traditional teaching skills with modern teaching media in teaching is a problem which is worth further studying, and to obtain the chance of training for teachers'teaching skills and to have the guidance of applying theory in teaching are the common desires of most of the teachers.The thesis is made up of five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the background of the research and talks about the reasons for this research and its significance. Chapter 2 focuses on the definitions of related terms, the classification of the classroom teaching skills and overview of the related researches. Chapter 3 is the main body of the thesis. It presents the contents of the survey, such as the awareness of the classroom teaching skills, the skills of lesson planning, class presentation, blackboard writing, and the employment of multi-media, the skills of imparting the learning strategies, cross-cultural knowledge, the skills of explaining and questioning and the skills of feedback getting and reinforcement. It also involves the skills of dealing with the unexpected events, organizing the communicative activities, variability and ending. Data collection and analysis can be seen in this chapter, and the related inspiration is elicited. In Chapter 4, some suggestions for the training of the classroom teaching skills and teachers'development are put forward. Chapter 5 serves as a brief conclusion of this thesis.
