Tang Biao, whose Family School Methodology is the first work named after teaching methodology in China, is a language educationist and an expert in language teaching methodology in the late Ming and the early Qing Dynasty. In Family School Methodology, he analyses the relationship between teaching and learning and puts forwards a lot of brilliant ideas on reading, writing, literacy and calligraphy. The book, with rich thoughts on language teaching, enriches the theoretical treasure-house in Chinese ancient traditional education and greatly contributes to language teaching nowadays. This thesis attempts to put theory into practice and make a comprehensive and systematic study on educational thought in Tang Biao's Family School Methodology.This thesis includes three parts, namely, introduction and literature review, main body and conclusion.In introduction and literature review, the author gives a brief introduction to the object, current situation, value and method of the study.The main body falls into three chapters, which are Tang Biao and his Family School Methodology, Tang Biao's language teaching thought and evaluation on Tang Biao's language teaching thought.In Chapter One, which points out that Family School Methodology is one-volume edition of Father Teacher Guidance and Reading and Writing Manual. The author gives an introduction to Tang Biao and the specific content of Father Teacher Guidance and Reading and Writing Manual.Chapter Two presents in details Tang Biao's conception of language teaching and his methods of teaching reading, writing and calligraphy. In Family School Methodology, Tang Biao puts forwards a set of thoughts on language teaching and gives a detailed analysis of the methods of teaching reading, writing and calligraphy based on experience of predecessors and his own teaching practice, which is still of distinctive features of our age and specific character.Chapter Three analyses the source of Family School Methodology and its educational thoughts in accordance with the time when Tang Biao lived in. The author probes into the value of Tang Biao's language teaching methodology and points out its historical and class limitations in terms of historical evolution and methodology.By analysing Tang Biao's Family School Methodology and the difficulties of current language teaching, the author draws a conclusion that it is of much practical value to explore and sift the precious heritage of our predecessors and learn to bring forth new ideas while inheriting it.
