A Study Of The Linguisitc Methods In Xu Songshi's Ethnologic Books

Mr. Xu Songshi is a famous ethnologist in our country, and he studies the histroy and culture of southen nations in China for many years. And, the multi-disciplinary methods which Mr. Xu Songshi always used in his ethnologic works gives us many other scientific legacy besides the ethnology. These scientific legacy is also very abundant and precious. Based on the contemporary linguistic knowledge, this paper is aimed at the language materials in Mr. Xu Songshi's ethnologic books, analising his language materials, and trying to discuss his linguistic methods.This paper mainly from two aspects to summaries the records of language materials and the using of linguisitc methods about zhuang nationality which are in the Mr. Xu Songshi's ethnologic books: First of all, we analyse tbe normal words of Zhuang language recorded by Mr. Xu Songshi . The specific way is that comparing tbe pronunciation and the meaning of normal words of zhuang language recorded by Mr. Xu Songshi with the same words which are in the Zhuang language dictionary . And then , comparing the Chinese characters which were Mr. Xu Songshi used to show the pronunciation with today's Chinese dialect, finding the corresponding relationships between of them.Secondly, we analyse the Zhuang nationality's place names which are involved in Mr. Xu Songshi's 'The way of searching and studing the place name'. The specific way is:comparing the words that Mr. Xu Songshi said used in the zhuang nationality's place names with today's standard Zhuang nationality's place names, finding the corresponding relationships of pronunciation and meaning between of then. And then, using the view of typology to analysing the special structural form of the zhuang nationality's place names, which Mr. Xu Songshi called 'The same first wrod' place names and 'The inverted ' place names.So, we can take these two aspects to generalize the advantagments and the disdvantagments when Mr. Xu Songshi use the linguistic knowledges and the linguistic methods, we affirm his contribution for the liguisitics ,but also piont out his mistakes of the liguisitics. And, supplying some reference for other people to study Zhuang nationality and the Mr. Xu Songshi's Ethnologic books.
