Happiness is an ideal of human beings. Many scientists prefer the term "subjective well-being"(SWB) to describing people's happiness from different views. This research defined SWB as two components which was accepted by most psychologists: the one was affect(positive affect and low levels of negative affect), and the other was cognition(life satisfaction).Based on the Campbell Index of well-being and some questions of life satisfaction, this article did a quantitative investigation to the urban residents in Nanjing. The paper analyzed factors which influenced people's SWB and explained the results with some theories such as The Sociology of Emotions and Maslow's hierarchy of needs. There were three parts in the thesis. First part described SWB of urban residents. The results showed that their SWB is not very high. The relevant statistical analysis indicated some individual characteristics influenced on residents' SWB except the gender. In the social development satisfaction and individual life satisfaction, residents were pleased with peace, health and so on,while they were not satisfied with income, career etc. The article also explained the results with the social roles, classes, social change and the social environment. In the second part, six suggestions for improving the level of people's SWB were presented according to the results of regression statistical analysis, they were having justice, urban power by developing science, technology and education, open government, environmental protection, contact with other people and enhance people's personal quality. The last part generalized the conclusions of the article and gave some ideas which could study further.
