In recent years, the development of adolescents' self-determination ability has drawn more and more attention from specialists and scholars both at home and abroad. This paper makes a theoretical and practical study on the weaknesses in this field of research. By sorting various concepts and related theories, this study has built its own theoretical model of self-determination. In accordance with the theoretical model, a questionnaire on self-determination is compiled. An investigation on the freshmen from seven colleges in Nanjing has helped to prove the rationality of the credibility and validity of the questionnaire. And the following research results are obtained:1. The self-determination ability of the freshmen is of medium level in general, and the scores are equally distributed in the various steps of self-determination.2. Under China's special national conditions and educational background, their self-determination ability displays obvious differences between students of different sexes, students from different colleges, different family economic backgrounds. However no obvious differences is seen between city-bred and country-bred students, nor are there obvious differences between those who are from single-child families and those who are not.3. Their self-determination ability is positively related to their ability in the three personality characteristics, namely perseverance, independence and self-discipline.Meanwhile, the study excavates future orientation of this research, including the verification of the results of empirical research and the broadening of the scope of research.
