Mathematics is an important component of human culture and has been regarded as an essential quality of each citizen. Mathematics has unique and irreplaceable functions in the process of the development of human's rational thinking. Since mathematics is a key subject measuring one's capability , most of the students receiving elementary education has been devoting great amounts of time and energy into it. However,not every one is successful. Many of those who have been excellent in elementary school and junior high school mathematics meet with great difficulties in senior high school mathematics. Although they want to study hard, there can be hardly any increase in their math scores and senior high school math teachers are people they are most afraid to meet. The phenomenon of being afraid of senior high school math is very common and should raise great attention. The cause of this phenomenon is multi-facet.What is more, under the standards of the new curricula, rote learning should be avoided while creative and critical thinking should be cultivated. The cultivation of thinking is not only beneficial to math learning but also to other subjects. This paper analyzes the factors affecting senior high school students'math achievements, their current learning situation and the counterstrategies for the differential success of math in senior high school. The differences in success of math learning should be concretely analyzed. In order to improve math achievement, positive education and direction should be conducted, interests cultivated, counseling strengthened and thinking trained.The research is a case study with questionnaires as the research instrument. The study is mainly focused on several major affective factors affecting students'achievement. And it reveals that the major factors are anxiety, motivation, interest, attitude, methods and thinking. Sound and effective counterstrategies are provided to deal with these factors.
