After the reform of elementary education, chemistry teaching in middle school set a higher goal which is to enhance student's scientific level, propose diverse studying way at the same time focusing on scientific inquiry, paying attention on cultivation and formation of scientific way of study. Therefore, teachers'way of teaching and students'way of studying in middle school should improve accordingly.Through author's action research and by way of interviewing, searching documents and questionnaire survey, this research validates that concept map is effective in teaching students"self-studying". At present, the application of concept map has been studied relatively limited in the area of education. Also due to the lack of knowledge and systematicness of element compound and its basic concept which leads to inconvenience of memorizing knowledge for students, this research chooses the application of concept map in middle school chemical element compound and its basic concept and principle as its research subject. The research was carried on from four aspects as follows:The first part is the elaboration of research subject. Combining current background of curriculum reform, the author states the reason of bringing forward this research and its significance.The second part is its theoretic base. By searching documents, the author summarizes some conclusion which set a firm theoretic foundation for this research.The third part is main body. According to self-action research and by combining middle school chemistry education's characteristic, the author chooses"Carbon and Carbon Oxide"as the example of element compound's knowledge and"The Secret of Substance's Formation"as the example of its basic concept. The author analyzes the whole process of understanding concept map, knowing concept map, imitating concept map, setting up concept map, creating macroscopic concept map in a creative way and then actively apply concept map in self-study. Also, in the process of building up concept map, the author analyzes its influence on relation between teachers and students, teachers'teaching, student's meaningful study and the diagnosis of teaching and studying. At the same time, the author states out some existing problems in the process of research.The fourth part is conclusion and suggestion. Through analyzing current status of concept map in the application of middle school chemistry teaching, its problems and effecting causes, the author concludes that concept map is an effect tool for teaching and studying. The author also makes some suggestions on the application of concept map in middle school chemistry teaching which should be paid more attentions to.
