With the increase of intercultural activities in China, intercultural communication competence (ICC) has become more and more important nowadays. In order to develop the students' ICC in intermediate vocational schools, we propose that culture teaching should be highlighted in spoken English teaching. This essay first introduces the history and the researches of culture teaching in the US and in China as well. Secondly, it tells the readers what is culture teaching and the reasons why we should teach the students foreign culture in English teaching. Thirdly, it states the aim and the objectives of culture teaching based on the researches both abroad and at home. ICC is a complex concept. Different people have different ideas. So in this essay the writer lists different definitions about it. In order to tell the readers what should be included in ICC, the essay discusss communication competence first. It touches upon the items that ICC includes according to what are included in communication competence. Then, the writer tests the students on ICC. The result shows that the students are weak in language behavior, rules of behavior and nonverbal communication. The essay analyzes why the students made so many mistakes in intercultural communication from the language level, nonverbal level, rules of behavior, mode of thinking, value orientation, ethnocentrism and so on. At last, the writer puts forward suggestions as to how to teach foreign culture in spoken English teaching, which includes the teaching aims, teaching objectives, teaching principles, selected materials and the ways of teaching. The writer also did an experiment. The result of the experiment reveals that the methods are effective.
