"The New English Curriculum Criteria"makes a requirement for a higher vocabulary ability of the students, and it also makes it clear that high school English teaching should focus on three aspects of the development of English Language Competence: students'ability to communicate in English, the ability to obtain and process information in English and the ability to think in English. Therefore, vocabulary teaching in high schools in line with the New English Curriculum Criteria plays an important part in English teaching.Ancient and modern linguists have been trying to find suitable teaching methods of foreign language teaching. Their efforts result in grammar translation method, listening and speaking method, scenario teaching method, communicative approach and so on. However, in traditional high school English teaching, teachers mostly focus on sounds, forms, meanings of words instead of paying more attention to systematic review of vocabulary, scientific vocabulary tests and input of culture consciousness. Students neither learned vocabulary actively nor attach importance to the practical application of words. Students'low vocabulary learning efficiency is mainly attributed to their lack of knowledge of English lexicology, lack of knowledge of culture, employment of impractical approaches and so on.. Therefore, how to explore a series of strategies in practical terms in line with the New English Curriculum Criteria are displayed in front of every English teacher. To find the solution, three questionnaires are carefully designed and have face-to-face interviews with efficient learners and inefficient learners. In the questionnaire, the author is trying to understand how the teaching of high school teachers and students'learning English vocabulary at present.On the basis of its present problems and its six principles, the thesis suggests eight strategies of vocabulary teaching, such as, "teaching students how to learn through visual presentation, teaching English words and expressions by humorous associations: teaching words by using form-classification, teaching words and expressions by reviewing them in a grammatical and meaningful way; teaching words and expressions by analyzing the context; teaching English words by expounding cultural elements involved.The study shows that although senior high school students are required to have a larger English vocabulary, their initiative is brought into full play and they are greatly motivated as long as suitable methods are applied and a good learning atmosphere is created for EVTL. It is quite confirmed that with the help of continuous efforts, great achievements will be fulfilled and the communicative ability of Chinese students in English will be eventually updated.
