Teaching students how to read English materials plays an important role in English teaching in high school. High school students spend a lot of time and energy improving their reading ability in many ways, however, there is always no good result.In order to help students with their reading and improve their language competence, the researcher conducted an action research in which she used the extensive reading material with a class of Chinese high school students to find out whether it could affect their English reading competence and language proficiency in general.According to the data collection instruments of Pre-test, Post-test of reading ability, Pre-questionnaire, Post-questionnaires and interviews as well as analysis, the researcher has got her goal that integrating extensive reading into the English learning in senior high schools is and it was effective and efficient in developing students' reading abilities and language proficiency in general. The research was supposed to prove that:1) integrating extensive reading into the English learning in senior high schools was necessary and feasible.2) integrating extensive reading into the English learning in senior high schools was effective and efficient because it satisfied the requirements of the high school students who had different interest, different language level and different knowledge background. 3) integrating extensive reading into the English learning in senior high schools was a good way of developing students' reading abilities, boosting their confidence in English reading and learning, stimulating their interest, and helping them form good reading habits to learn.4) class library, instruction of reading methods, class discussion, reading report and other activities could improve their reading ability..5) though the simplified readers were not true stories, they could help improve the high school students' language proficiency efficiently. It is a bridge to a higher level. High school students appreciated the extensive reading materials so they liked reading. In this way, they could master and use the language faster.It is hoped that this research can play an active part in high school English teaching and can help the students improve their reading competence and English proficiency in general.
