One of the most important ways to improve students' communicative skills is to improve their reading skills which are learnt mainly by intensive reading and extensive reading. Actually, there are enough teaching hours for intensive reading which are attached great importance to. However, extensive reading is always put in the second place or even forgotten in our daily teaching though every one knows it is also very important. To solve this problem, I tried to give one extensive lesson to students each week in my class. After one semester's learning, students have got away from many bad reading habits and their reading skills are greatly improved, which has an positive effect on their exam results. Through experiment, questionnaire and test, this essay tries to find out how to give extensive lessons in senior high school and give some practical suggestions on teaching plan, teaching targets and the selection of teaching material. The main discoveries are as follows:Firstly, although we spend one lesson on practicing extensive reading, it will not affect their exam results. In fact, the improvement of their reading skills can be helpful for their study.Secondly, after one term's practice, they have a higher scores in reading because they have special training. In turn, they are more confident and have stronger drive in study.Thirdly, students make progress in other aspects apart from the improvement in exam results. From the interview and questionnaire, we can see that students are more positive in learning English and they have got rid of some bad reading habits, which may have a longer impact in their English study.
