In the many disciplines of basic education, teaching Chinese in primary schools is the one of larger reform movements, more methods, longer duration and the more controversies. Many people blame the low language teaching efficiency for the reason that it is difficult to learn Chinese characters and literacy teaching waste too much time. Thus there came into being a variety of literacy teaching methods. According to incomplete statistics, there are more than 30 kinds of the literacy teaching methods with fixed names, and"Learning Chinese Characters in Phonetics, Read and Write in Advance"is one of them.The premise of is to master the Chinese pinyin system and fulfill the multi-functional roles of the system, and its principle is to contain knowledge of Chinese characters in learning Chinese. Given the condition that children can't read or read well upon being enrolled in primary school, this method, which is based on correctly estimating the spoken level and intelligence potential of the children and relying on the Chinese pinyin, starts teaching listening, speaking, reading and writing at the same time and promotes each other, to achieve the purposes of language development, thinking training, intellectual development and capacity-building. However, in the past 25 years of its development, many problems have arisen. Therefore, it is of extreme importance to study the advantages and disadvantages of the experiment with this method. This is bound to have a certain impact upon the literacy teaching methods of Chinese characters.Our study shows that the method has genuine advantages in developing students'language and thinking. Proceeding from its scientific aspect, we try to illustrate these advantages by comparing with other methods of teaching literacy.At the same time, during the process, we also found a number of drawbacks of this method. Through survey data, we attempt to reflect its drawbacks of wrongly written or mispronounced characters often appearing when it is in use and much difficulty it brings to children when being pronounced directly, and its conflicts with the law of Chinese characters. In addition, we focus on the analysis of the causes of these defects and ways of overcoming these shortcomings and described the method of improvement.
