Reading teaching has been receiving much attention in senior high school English teaching.However,for the moment,reading teaching mainly depends on the textbook,and what its disadvantage is that it contains less information,its materials are renewed slowly, the vocabulary is not enough and the width of knowledge is narrowly extended.From 2003 on,the National Entrance Examination has been giving us a very clear instruction,that is,the teachers should help enlarge students' vocabulary and help them to read article related to modern life,social,culture and technology.By doing this,the students will be able to improve the skills of picking out and dealing with information.In English teaching,we can find that if you want to improve the students' reading ability,you can not only depend on the textbooks.Compared with the Text books,English newspapers and tissues have their features.They have new contents plentiful amount, various articles,and interesting stories.They combine knowledge and fun together and they are close to life and fashion.using them as materials in reading class can enhance the students' enthusiasm,enrich teaching resources,widen teaching ways and therefore it can develop the students' interests in English,and eventually we achieve the goal of improving the students' reading comprehension ability.In fact,reading is a meaning -making process involving an interaction between the reader and the text.Readers use mental activities in order to construct meaning from text.They do not read word for word but rather use their background knowledge and various strategies.Therefore,it is of great importance for the teachers of reading to advance their understanding of reading comprehension by realizing the mental process of reading comprehension and how prior knowledge can enhance a reader's interaction-reading with the text and find some strategies for successful teaching.This thesis based on the process of reading comprehension and schema theory tries to elaborate on the practical application of schema theory to the teaching of EFL reading,and further elaborate the theory in the English press reading as a means of support to improve student reading ability.The paper mainly focus on the following four aspects:1.The factors of affecting reading effect;2. Cognition of reading comprehension process;3.schema theory;4. strategies for English press reading comprehension.Through nearly one semester of practically teaching and experimental investigation,The students' interests and the ability to reading were improved clearly after the teaching method was used. The author points out the limitations of this thesis and makes some suggestions for further study in the last part of this thesis.
