To deal with the common problems of high time consumption and low efficiency in middle school English teaching and that teachers put too much emphasis on the teaching of English language knowledge while ignoring the development of students' language capability, the thesis, on the empirical research, advocates situational approach, that is, to design an appropriate language learning situation to improve the students' capability to use the English language by analyzing, researching and experimenting.The research mainly adopts literature study and case study. By extensively reading, analyzing and summing up other researchers' and teachers' work on the problem as well as studying a great number of teaching cases and observing other teachers' classes, the writer of the thesis summarizes some characteristics of applying the situational approach in actual teaching in class, on which basis, the writer puts forward how to design an authentic or simulated situation appropriately, together with some principles and ways to improve the students' comprehensive capability to use English.The thesis includes seven parts:â… . Introduction. Having analyzed the present situation and problems in English language teaching in high school, the writer points out some common problems that teachers put too much emphasis on the teaching of English language knowledge but ignore the development of students' ability to use English properly, which leads to the loss of interest in learning English, and in turn, the students incapability to use English.â…¡. Literature study on designing and applying situational approach in high school. In this part, the writer collects the studies of home and foreign educationists on designing an appropriate situation for language learning, along with the present researches on the problem in teaching English in high schools.â…¢. Concept identification. The writer explains the nature of language in foreign language teaching and identifies what is situation and comprehensive capability to use language.â…£. Theoretical basis of designation of language situation. Based on theories of language acquisition, constructivism learning, the theory of schema and other theories, the thesis illustrates that the ability of language use can only be improved in the authentic and simulated situation.â…¤. The principles of designing an appropriate situation. The thesis argues that some principles must be obeyed if an appropriate situation is to be designed on the basis of theories and aims of language teaching.â…¥. Some methods of designing language situation. Many ways can be used to design a situation for language learning, but the thesis focuses mainly on tasked-based language teaching and learning, the application of multi-media in language learning class, body language and a few other ways, due to the space of the article.â…¦. How to design an appropriate language situation. The last part deals with how to use the ways mentioned in the previous chapter in different steps language teaching.No doubt, there will be a lot of difficulties in applying the ways and methods talked about in the thesis. There are always too many students in one class and students lack the environment to use English out of class. In addition, the teachers' language ability is also not quite satisfactory. All those factors have impacts on designing and applying an appropriate language situation. As a result, the research still remains to be further studied and improved.
