As a global language, English is a major vehicle of the development of science,technique, economy and cross-culture communication all around the world. We can't deny the fact that English is becoming more and more important not only at institutions of education but also in our daily life. There has been a consensus in theESL/EFL teaching realm that vocabulary plays a core role in language learning process. However, in English teaching, especially at high schools in China, vocabulary learning has long been considered to be a prolonged battle that is so hard to win. Low efficiency has become a bottleneck in vocabulary teaching and learning process.Vocabulary teaching is the most important in English teaching .The number of vocabulary can directly affect not only listening and reading but also speaking and writing . Emphasis on vocabulary is reasonable and feasible. However, it has long been ignored by many teachers who think it is unnecessary to devote any significant part of their limited time in class to vocabulary teaching and students themselves should be responsible for building up their vocabulary. Understanding the needs of the students and exploring positive and effective vocabulary teaching/learning strategies is an essential way to lessen the burden of the students and to promote life-long and over-all education.I have been teaching for 11 years and I know the problems and difficulties of English vocabulary teaching in middle school. So I always try my best to work out the methods of vocabulary teaching. This thesis focuses on how teaching strategies and learning strategies can correspond in practice. The most important is teaching strategy—how to teach the students to learn. In this way, the students can develop interest in English study and get access to more words and enlarge vocabulary.The contents of this paper are as follows: at first, point out why such a research should be made and the contents of each part; second, present a literature review. This part discusses some concepts and English vocabulary teaching at home and abroad, including the theoretical basis of the whole paper; third, analyse the vocabulary teaching and learning circumstances in high schools in China. At the same time, I point out the problems of vocabulary teaching and learning; fourth, discuss the methods of improving vocabulary teaching; at last, summarize the whole paper and propose some pedagogical advice for future work in vocabulary teaching.
