Language is based on its vocabulary and vocabulary teaching plays an important part in English teaching. With the development of society, a higher standard of English teaching has been set in the form of New Curriculum. The quantity of vocabulary increases greatly and the grades of words improve a lot. Vocabulary learning is one of the difficulties facing our Chinese students. Thus the author analyses the reasons why these problems come into being and finds that the teaching theory and teaching methods guided by the behaviorism can not match with the vocabulary teaching fully. Therefore, the problem of how to teach vocabulary effectively stands before us. Constructivism is a fairly advanced theory system. It emphasizes that the acquisition of knowledge happens in the process of self-construction, during which circumstance functions greatly. Scaffolding is one of its outstanding theories. It pays more attention to learners themselves and their aptitudes in the teaching process. This theory also stresses the functions of assessments with the hope of stimulating the learners' interests. Interactive teaching is the process in which teachers, students and teaching materials will affect each other. So the learners can communicate with each other in English and learn more effectively. This thesis combines two theories and tries to show their characteristics with the help of various class activities. Finally, the thesis finds out that vocabulary teaching guided by constructivism is better than that guided by behaviorism in the long term by comparison.
