The quality of faculty determines the quality of higher education. Professional development of university faculty is important to the quality of university faculty. So the research on this field is meaningful and valuable.This thesis focuses on the professional development of university young faculty. University is the key to the growth of our nation and society. Young faculty just start their career, they need attention, guidance and support. Faculty professional development will improve the quality of young teachers, enhance the learning of students and promote the quality of higher education.The body of this thesis includes the following four parts. First, it describes the current situation of young faculty of universities, for example, the increasing number of young teachers, the expectation of research outcome, the demands of teaching work, the study of psychological profile and the multidimensional social roles of the young faculty. Based on this study, the thesis points out the characteristics of the young faculty and many facets of the problems they face. Second, it summarizes the theories about faculty professional development, including "the theory on the stages of faculty professional development" and "the theory on the quality dimension of faculty professional development". Based on the above two theories this thesis develops and gives visual model for the quality development of faculty. Third, based on the theory of "stakeholder", it summarizes the necessity of professional development of young faculty from both the teachers and the students' views. In the last part, it gives the principles, the implications of three theoretical models, influencing factors and suggested measures for promoting young faculty development.
