As the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance proposed the establishment of faculty development centers conforming to each school's characteristics in 2011, and officially announced the development of 30 faculty development demonstration centers in 2012, universities in China began to own a number of faculty development centers to meet the need of faculty development and to enhance faculties' ability. Since then the idea of faculty development in Chinese Universities and Colleges has been widely accepted and recognized. The establishment and perfection of the system of faculty development is an effective way to improve faculties' ability and level on which the development of higher education in China really depends. Therefore, this paper, concentrating on the faculty development system of research university, mainly introduces the concept faculty development as well as faculty development system, learns the advanced experience of faculty development from the research university in Western countries, discusses the achievements and problems of faculty development system in China, analyzes the actual needs of faculty development in research university through the method of questionnaire survey, and designs the system of faculty development in every career stages in China.The paper consists of five sections. The first section starts with an introduction in which the research backgrounds, literature reviews, research significance, and research methods are mainly introduced. This section also defines the concepts of faculty development, faculty development system and research university.The second section proposes the enlightenments through those cases study on Harvard University, National University of Singapore and the University of Sydney from which the ripe experience of faculty development are put forward for the faculty development of research university in China.The third section describes the faculty development system of China and summarizes the achievements and problems of university faculty training and development.The forth section makes a statistic analysis on the needs of the faculty development of research university to understand the actual needs of faculties' career development in the early, middle and late career development stage in China through questionnaire survey.The last section according to the problems of faculty development system, proposes broad suggestions of faculty development of research university, and designs the faculty development system of research university in different career stages in China based on the results of questionnaire survey and the Greenhouse Career Development Stage Theory.With the establishment of 30 faculty development demonstration centers such as Xiamen University, the construction of the faculty development center has already been an irresistible trend. This paper proposes some specific and purposeful projects of faculty development from the perspective of personal development, organizational development, teaching development and professional development, designs the faculty development system in various career stages to make a theoretical basis for the faculty development by studying on the system of faculty development in China, drawing the ripe experience of faculty development from the research university in America, Singapore and Australia, and making a questionnaire on the needs of faculty development in research university in China.
