| Where there are key schools (the high school, which nowadays is called Experimental and Demonstrating Normal High Schools, EDNHS), there are gifted and talented students in those schools. In the late 1970's, Chinese government had put forward a policy on 'building and well-running a number of key schools' so as to rectify education order and increase the efficiency of the education system. In the past 30 years, with the development of our society, the leading value of basic education has been changing from efficiency-oriented to justice-oriented. However, it is an indisputable fact that the tradition to distinguish key schools and ordinary schools in education system is reserved. Given this situation, there is a morality education problem of gifted and talented students in the key schools in which they are studying. For many years, GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) in the EDNHS have made great contribution to and played an un-substitutable role in the cultivation of the talents specialized in science and technology. Despite those praise, gifted and talented student and GATE still have some serious problems in fact. The emphasis on the Promotion Rate of the high schools as well as the government department in charge of education and the pursuit of personal political promotion lead the GATE policy to blow hot and cold. Since education experience and degree are regarded as the principal means for the society today to divide people into different estates, many EDNHS are keen to conduct course contests by means of experimental class in order to increase their own Promotion Rate and social prestige to attract more top students, which makes the aim and objective to foster gifted and talented students ambiguous and even distorted. The author, whose main work is the morality education in the Education Department of an EDNHS-YA High School in Shanghai, is familiar with GATE and morality education and accumulates many experience and case studies in this area. Besides the perspective and analysis as an participants, my dissertation applies many different methods in special, such as archive and case study, questionnaire survey, field interview and comparable study. To enhance the applicability, my research contains the spot check survey in other EDNHS including NM High School, JP High School and JQ High School with 322 effective samples. In addition, the author has made more than 20 interviews with teachers, headmasters and government department leaders to increase the credibility and the effectiveness of the research. The research shows that the problems of moral education are revealed in the following aspects: The policy deviation of the gifted and talented students' moral education leads GATE to focus on the intelligence not morality. The schools emphasizing the Promotion Rate regard the gifted and talented students as the 'image ambassador' of the proportion. The irrelevant education of the social environment and family brings many negative impacts on them. After further analyzing the problems of the gifted and talented students, the author summed up the following reasons: The policy of the key school and the gifted and talented students are in it blows hot and cold which is made by the Government over the past decades. The ambiguous Teaching Objectives of GATE made by school resulted in the utilitarian and homogenization Teaching Objectives and unprofessional gifted teacher troop. Social and family education has a deep negative effect on GATE.GATE brings a special meaning in the education system of our country. The corresponding effective recommendations for improvement can be drawn further after this study: We should face up to GATE and increase the government funding and security to GATE. Schools should implement effective measures to promote moral education for the gifted and talented students. The support from parents and social resources should be strived for actively so as to improve our GATE continuously and to achieve 'student-oriented' and develop all kinds of students, which is the highest goal of the education for all-round development. |
