The task-based teaching has been discussed by domestic and overseas scholars since the 1980s. In China, many people who are engaged in the elementary education have made a large number of researches on the application of the model. Mostly, the subjects of the study are the students who study in the cities, where there are many good teachers, rich extracurricular resources. These provide a good basis for the application of the task-based teaching. However, in China, there are numerous people who are living in the countryside, whose children are educated in the backward schools which only have poor equipment. As a member of them, the writer starts the experimental research that applies the task-based teaching to the rural junior schools for the improvement of the English teaching.The paper indicates the purpose of the research in the first chapter. In the second chapter, besides the definition of the task and the task-based teaching, the theoretical principles and the researches made by the domestic and overseas scholars are also expounded. The current situation of Chinese rural schools and the main reasons why the situation is caused are described briefly in Chapter Three. At last, the theory is engaged into the experimental research of the task-based teaching applied in the rural junior students. According to the data collected from the experiment, the result is obtained: although some problems appeared in the research, the task-based language teaching is useful for the English teaching improvement in the rural schools in China. Chapter Five is the conclusion of the research.
