In this paper, we take the space expansion of colleges of Xi' an as main line. Under the guidance of location theory in the agricultural, residential location theory, paces mutual gravitational theory and Brown - Moore residential spaces decision-making model, we conduct a research on space expansion, expansion type, expansion characteristics, drivers and their spatial expansion effect of Xian University. To conduct the research, we use normative and empirical method, dynamic and static binding assay, location analysis, questionnaire surveys and literature analysis. The paper is mainly divided into the following six aspects:(1) The historical process of Xi' an University space expansion can be shown in four stages: low-level embryonic stage (1902 -1949), large-scale development phase (1949-1966), wandering phase (1966-1976) and the rapid development phase (1976—2007).(2) The historical process of Xi'an University space expansion shows the characteristics of suburbanization, concentration, ring location, fan-shaped distribution, the multi-campus colleges and so on.(3)The space expansion of colleges and universities has different types. According to the initial establishment of colleges and universities in Xi'an, it can be classified in different ways: the growing and transferring type. According to the space expansion, it can be divided into combined type, exogenous growing type, and endogenous dilated type.(4)The main factors to promote the space expansion of Xi'an University include socio-economic factors, political and policy factors, urban development and city planning factors, internal factors and so on.(5) This paper set up a model of site selection and space expansion of colleges and universities. The model explains the main factors that should be considered about the location of colleges and universities. The model can reflect the history of the space evolution of colleges and universities space expansion in Xi'an.(6) This paper also analyzes the effects of different type of space expansion on some different interests group. From the analysis, we can see that Colleges and universities come to transfer to the outskirts of the city in line with the laws of economics, and the building a new campus of colleges and universities is better than the building of many campuses. But sometimes the building of the new campus did not fully take into account the interests of teachers and students, which makes the new campus is far from the site at a reasonable location.By analyzing the effects of space expansion of colleges and universities, we see that the expansion of space fits for the economic law. The government should have a clear understanding of the development trend of colleges and universities, and support the development of colleges and universities by making active regulations. When the colleges and Universities laissez-faire engross land, the Government should not stop or allow them without thinking it over, but develop detailed regulations to make them use land scientifically and improve the efficiency of intensive utilization of land. When the colleges and Universities are deciding the new site of their new campus, they should consider the operating cost of the teacher and the students, only in this way can we find the proper site theoretically, and make our colleges or Universities have brighter future. To those colleges or Universities which have many campuses, we need to give a clear division of the work, and let each campus play its best role.
