Study On The Master Student-faculty Ratio In Universities

The student-faculty ratio of the graduate students in university is the critical condition for the quality of graduate student education. We try to know the present situation of the student-faculty ratio of the graduate students in university and discuss universities how to determine reasonable countermeasures, in order that we can guarantee and improve graduate students education quality. It is vitally significant.But, at present, education regulations in our country, don't have any explicit stipulation and the system theory about graduate students and teachers'proportional relationships. In our country , at present ,only Shi Huayun did some research on how to calculate and set the student-faculty ratio of the graduate students in university in her postgraduate paper. But as a result of the time and the condition limit, we only take one university to carry on the analysis as the case .Therefore, the surveys on the student-faculty ratio of graduate students remain to be testified by practice .On the basis of Shi Huayun's study , we select another representative local university. We get the investigation and study the questions of the student-faculty ratio .Also we will compare the two different type universities and try to find some factors influencing in the student-faculty ratio of the education of masters. Thus we may further testify the process of how we get appropriate ratios as reference for the frame of the student-faculty ratio of the education of masters. So, on the basis of the study , we may set a reasonable student-faculty ratio of the education of masters according to the actual situation for the different university .It is to make the university have some adjustments or some improvements on outfit of faculty and teachers'workload .Survey results: (1) In S University , the ratio at present on the five disciplines----Liberal art, Economic manage, Science, Engineering course and Skill are 35.15:1, 31.7:1, 35.07:1, 35.85:1, 22.82:1, the average ratio is 32.12:1. The appropriate ratios on the five disciplines are 7.51:1, 7.02:1, 9.09:1, 7.77:1, 6.35:1, and the average ratio is 7.75:1. It is very different between the ratios at present and the appropriate ratio of the teachers and the students .(2) In the investigation of S University, we compare the student-faculty ratio of graduate students in S University with that of the whole country', and find the ratio indeed much higher .It shows that the data of collection from education administration are very different from the data at present .Because it is simple to calculate the ratio of the number of instructors and the number of masters. It ignores the fact that instructors assume the workload of a large number of undergraduates'teaching .(3) We make a comparison between the local university and the key university ,and find that the student-faculty ratio of different universities differs.It is mainly influenced by the level of university,outfit of faculty,the number of instructors,the number of masters,scale of class,credit,instructor's workload of undergraduate teaching and other factors.
