| Suzhou is a famous city with a long history of cultural activities, enjoying the fame of"oriental venice". After opium war broke out, suzhou became one of the ports through which the western powers invaded China and saw at an early time the introduction of western lifestyle, education thinking, sports into China. The establishment of missinary schools helped the spread of western cultures including sports. The geological, economic, political and trade conditions of suzhou provided enabling environment for the development of modern sports. Taking account of these factors, the author studied the development of suzhou's sports in morden times, the span of which is customarily defined as 1840-1949.looking at suzhou's sports development in modern history, collecting and studying historical documentations on suzhou's school sports, competitive sports and mass sports in modern times, the author got a clearer picture of suzhou's sports in modern times. Further discussed is the characteristic traits of 3 types of sports in different historical periods which is followed by preliminary assessment of suzhou's modern sports. These are of positive significance to enriching suzhou's sports in modern times.Research shows the development of suzhou's modern time sports is unique and thus different from that of other cities. There were crisis and challenges, with uneven development among school sports, competitive sports and mass sports while the focal point is school sports. The flourishing of modern media promoted the development of suzhou's modern education and sports.
