As the world level of competitive swimming is increasingly enhanced, the competitive age of excellent swimmers generally extends.A large amount of athletes aged 30 still maintain advanced competitiveness. However, few Chinese swimmers in the age of almost 30 can still participate in training and contest.A majority of athletes end their athletic career when they are 23 years old.The retiring age of the majority of excellent swimmers in China is the golden age for world swimmers making their best athletic performance. Thus, the problem of short competitive age and athletic career among Chinese swimmers is one of the key issues hindering the general promotion of swimming. It' s high time for coaches and swimmers in China to tackle the Problem of how to choose proper contents and methods of training and arrange appropriate load, according to the features of advanced swimmers in every aspect, and how to keep athletes at a world level for a longer period of time after they got advanced performance. The methods of literature research, survey, tracking observation, statistics and case study are applied in this thesis. After studying the training cycle and load in the condition maintaining phase of advanced swimmers in China, the following'conclusion is drawn:(1) In China, the training for advanced swimmers in their condition maintaining phase should be arranged in a flexible manner, being more personalized and pertinent than other phases. The training in this phaseshould pay more attention to the recovery of both physical and psychological fatigue. The training rhythm changes obviously in every phase, with heavier load than other training phases. The Chinese male advanced swimmers enter condition maintaining phase at the age of 22.3±2.06 and female will enter the phase at the age of 20.6±1.85.(2) In the preparation period for condition maintaining phase, advanced swimmers will be trained for 10 to 14 weeks and have adjustment for 1 to 3 weeks. The total times of load will reach the utmost, with heaviest load.Training arrangement will transit from general to specific. This period focuses on land drill. The classes are almost the same with little change.(3) Advanced swimmers in their condition maintaining phase will have matches within 5 to 8 weeks.Training is more personalized and pertinent than other time. The total times of load in match time will be less than those in the preparation period. As the contest approaches, times of load will decrease gradually, but the ultimate strength will be raised.During the games phase, the load will decrease gradually, with the least load before the match. This phase attach more importance to recovery post training and condition-forming before the contest.(4) Advanced swimmers in condition maintaining phase will have their recovery period within 1 to 3 weeks. The training in the post-event recovery tends to be arranged in a natural fashion. This period will emphasize aerobic training. The training load after big events will be less than that after some common games. The period will see the least load.
