As the initial and important stage for talent cultivation, freshman orientation serves as an opportunity to demonstrate college or university charisma and enhance its image. Because colleges or universities are major carriers to generate and spread culture,how to work with the cultural invasion in freshman orientation should be theoretical and practical workers'common concern.Freshman orientation covers three periods: pre-preparation, medium reception, and at last entrance education. It enjoys triple natures including education,management and service.It is closely related with college or university leaders,student union,freshmen and many other groups.To a certain extent, delivering sufficient concern to freshman orientation means rooting out which environmental factors will influence the growth of freshmen.Taking year 2,007's undergraduate students of Huazhong University of Science& Technology(HUST) into survey, this study used case study, survey, interview methods to gather information, and used organizational culture as a perspective to analyze problems in freshman orientation.This study found that in freshman orientation, HUST's physical environment takes on a look of "over rigid" and "lack of flexibility"; entertainment culture and utilitarianism are popular among student groups;commercial advertisings and university slogans are contradictory to each other.To tackle those problems,the paper proposed a "cultural orientation" from the perspective of organizational culture:(1)establish the concept of "cultural orientation".That's to recognize the importance of organizational culture in university management.(2)improve the physical environment. We should encourage everyone to dig out cultural implication from the existing landscape and diversify the human landscape in line with the actual conditions.(3)improve the college or university system culture. Especially ,we should make sure the process of selecting student cadres is fair, open and just.Guiding students carders to foster the service concept of"all for students", we can prevent their utilitarianism based on capital accumulation.(4)enrich college or university behavior culture.The core values should penetrate into university daily operation,and into staff behavior so as to regulate human behavior,language and individual etiquette.(5)extract school spiritual culture. During the freshman orientation, all staff should strive to convey the university spirit through colorful legendary stories,and use the campus radio, internet to strengthen such publicity.
