The theoretical foundation of this paper is Self-determination Theory and Achievement Goal Orientation Theory, which are also elaborated in the paper. On the basis of the reviewed study, this paper has a research on the intrinsic motivation and goal orientation of sports for elementary and secondary students in Shanghai, through the methods of documents, interviews, mathematical statistics, and questionnaires and so on.In order to make the questionnaire more applicable to the target students, this paper has revised the questionnaire of (IMI), < Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire > (TEOSQ), < The Sport Situational Motivation Scale > (SSIMS) and < Physical Self-Description Questionnaire > (PSDQ) involved in the research. The tests have shown that they have a relatively stable internal consistency. Through some mathematical statistics methods such as Cluster Analysis, One-Way ANOVA, T Test, Correlations Analysis and Factor Analysis, this paper analyses the obtained datum and the results are as follows:1. The motivations of ages of elementary and secondary students to participate in sports are more for their own interest, and the boys are superior to the girls at the intrinsic motivation, goal orientation and physical self-description. Boys select the sports activities more from the motivation.2. Stress / tension are negative prediction indicators of intrinsic motivation and task-orientation, the increase of which will lead to the decline in intrinsic motivation of students participating in sports activities.3. There are gender differences in most dimensions such as intrinsic motivation, goal orientation and physical self-description, but the performance of boys is stronger than girls.4. The age difference is not obvious in intrinsic motivation and goal orientation, but the differences in grade are distinctive in the aspects of interest, perceived choice, intrinsic motivation, and physical fitness.5. There is an interactive relationship between task-orientation and ego-orientation. Two orientations exist in an individual body at the same time, but the level of which are different. Through Custer Analysis we can obtain four categories of goal orientation: 1-low task -high ego orientation; 2-high task- low ego orientation; 3-low task– low ego orientation; 4-high task -high ego orientation. Most of the elementary and secondary students in the aged group are high task - high ego orientation.6. Different goal-oriented person has his own tendency in gender differences and grade differences which are represented from intrinsic motivation, goal orientation and physical self-description.7. There is a positive correlation between perceived ability and effort of goal orientation, but the degree of such correlation is different, which will decline as the task-orientation weakening. It can be indicated that the task-oriented person and ego-oriented person regard capacity and effort differently.8. Three factors can be extracted through factor analysis on all dimensions concluding intrinsic motivation, goal orientation and physical self-description, and then the three factors can explain most of all dimensions. The first factor variable is basically a reflection of perceived competence, ego-orientation, sports, sports ability, physical self-worth, physical fitness; the second factor variable reflects the interest, effort, perceived choice, value, task-orientation and intrinsic motivation; the third reflects the dimensions of stress and health.
