With the fast development of social economy, China's higher education had already come into the period of mass-access higher education. Under the condition of fact that higher education expanded rapidly, the quality of university teaching, especially the teaching quality of undergraduate education arouses attention from all over the society. Based on this background, it is necessary for us to investigate and research the current situation of undergraduate teaching quality. The research result could provide some first-hand data which are objective and comprehensive to all social circles thus they can use those data to evaluate the quality of university teaching and to carry out some effective teaching reforms.The researcher mainly tries to analyze the current situation of undergraduate teaching quality, which is the critical problem in the development of undergraduate education. The quality of undergraduate teaching involves so many aspects. Engineering subject has the most proportion of all subjects in most domestic college. All kinds of problems in undergraduate teaching are more concentrated and obvious in engineering undergraduate teaching, and the connection of social demand and quality of engineering undergraduate teaching is more direct and wide.So the researcher chooses Huazhong University of Science &Technology(HUST) as research object, basing on the results from student satisfaction questionnaire of'the Quality of Engineering Undergraduate Teaching', which used by research team to investigate the current situation of undergraduate engineering teaching, to research'the way of training students'and'teachers'deeply. According to the qualitative method, the research use interview outline to talk with teacher deeply, thus we can analyze the data from interview by grounded theory, in this way'the platform of mass subject'and'the relation between teaching and research'are taken into account to investigate how they affect the quality of undergraduate engineering teaching of HUST. The researcher arrived at two grounded theories: the first one is the quality of engineering undergraduate teaching has greatly improved by the platform of mass subject; and the second one is society, university and teachers as a combination of factor, which led to the imbalance between teaching and research. At last, the advices to these questions are also pointed out: 1, improving the status of practice teachers, optimizing the team of practice teaching; 2, advancing the harmonious development between research and teaching; 3, planning for teachers'assessment with short-term, mid-term and long-term.
