With more and more serious national crisis in the time between later Qing Dynasty and earlier Republic of China, a lot of excellent intellectuals asked for the call of the social reform and reformed the educational system. Culturing and selecting the intellectuals meeting the need of modern culture are their consensus. As the representative of Hunan intellectuals, Wang Xian-qian, combining with related not only proposed many educational suggestions, but also advocated educational reform. He tried his best to inherit the statecraft ideology thinking and combined the Chinese traditional culture with the western modern culture in order to reach the educational aim of the consideration to ins and outs. He also suggested introducing the western culture to reform traditional education. Wang Xian-qian`s educational thinking not only existed Chinese traditional culture, but also obviously had the time brand. His educational thinking and practice had great influence on promoting the modernization process for Hunan education.On the basis of the life, social communication and educational practice, Wang Xian-qian, combining with related historical materials, discussed his thinking in the imperial examination system, academy and modern education, then investigated his affects on the modern educational development in Hunan Province.The paper is composed of six parts. The first one is the exordium, including literature review, research significance, research meaning and so on. The second one is to introduce Wang Xian-qian`s life, his family background and the influence of Hunan intellectuals on his education. The third one discusses Wang Xian-qian`s thinking for the imperial examination system and his changing thinking according to the time The fourth one studies Wang Xian-qian`s thinking for the academy, his practice in Yuelu Academy and his characteristics combining Chinese culture with western culture ,which exists traditional culture and modern culture. The fifth one is his thinking for modern education, that shows his conservative respect and his enlightened thinking for his modern educational culture. The conclusion summarizes Wang Xian-qian`s educational thinking which not only adhered to Confucian tradition, but also advised the statecraft ideology thinking.
