1. Research ObjectivesThrough the research about current track and field teaching in colleges and universities, the author finds that there are many problems existing in current college track and field teaching(For example, the track and field course's teaching material is very difficult, and few people select its optional courses). The author analyzes the current college track and field teaching on the basis of searching for a large number of relevant information combining personal teaching practice, trying to explore the trend of reform, and then providing references for the arrangement of track and field courses in colleges and universities.2. Research Subjects and MethodsThis study takes 1440 male sophomores and 83 physical education teachers in six colleges and universities in Hubei Province as the subjects. 1440 boys are randomly divided into 2 groups: control group (A) group and the experimental group (B) group. Two groups contain 48 classes, about 30 people in each class on the average. The control group follows the conventional teaching methods in track and field course, while the experimental group uses "the main multiple-choice" and other teaching methods.With the methods of literature, questionair, mathematical statistics, interviews and comparison test, this thesis carries out in-depth research on the current situation of the current track and field teaching in Hubei colleges and universities, which is mainly focused on cultivating students'interests, reforming the organizational form of PE class, creating the atmosphere of track and field, emphasizing the changes of teachers'roles and their self-development.3. Research Results3.1 It is found in the survey on PE teachers in colleges and universities in Hubei Province that 56.5 percent teachers think that the small number of students taking the optional class is the main factor affecting the optional class of track and field; 94.9% teachers think that we should optimize the content of textbook, and increase its interests; 82.6% teachers advocate that teachers should foster students'awareness of life-long exercise.3.2 It is found in the survey on students in colleges and universities in Hubei Province that 78.4 percent students do not like track and field classes; 58.9 percent agree to cancel the track and field class; 33.3 percent considere that the current means of teaching track and field is monotonous with dull content; 27% choose the running in extra-curricular exercise. 3.3 This thesis points out the reasons influencing the carrying out of track and field sports, and carries out in-depth research in the aspects of cultivating students'interests, reforming the organizational form of PE classes and creating atmosphere of track and field sports, paying attention to changes in the roles of PE teachers and their own development. After a year of teaching practice, the fitness indicators of experimental group are enhanced greatly. It can be seen from the t-test: three of test scores (in situ shot put, vertical jumping height, standing long jump), was significantly different compared with the original score (P <0.05), two and the other test scores (100m, 1500m) have significant difference with the original scores (P <0.01).4. Research Conclusion4.1 To open track and field optional classes is necessary. Hubei has a considerable number of enthusiasts in colleges and universities fond of track and field sports and some potential groups. It has a good mass base, so we should open track and field optional classes actively.4.2 Track and field optional courses plays an important role in enhancing athletic physique, improving quality, giving instructions on extra-curricular physical activities and forming lifelong awareness of physical activity. Besides, it is able to promote the development of track and field competition.4.3 In extra-curricular physical exercise, there are more boys loving physical activity than girls, and understanding on the value of sports is inadequate. There is a significant difference in attitudes and participation in sports. In the extra-curricular physical activities, the vast majority of students play ball games as a means of physical exercise, while track and field sports becomes a "forgotten corner."4.4 The main factors causing the landslide of track and field courses in physical education classes are the monotony of teaching methods and means, the boredom of teaching content, students'poor physical fitness and the existing traditional assessment of physical education.4.5 It is highly valued by all PE teachers to reform the teaching contents of "pure physical fitness" competition in traditional track and field lesson, to play down competition and examination, and to promote "sub-technical" concept of teaching and to adopt the teaching of combining entertainment with fitness.4.6 The majority of colleges and universities in Hubei province can guarantee the basic annual Track and Field Games, but the items and forms of competition are too traditional without any change. Teachers and students are more interested in short run and collective items. It is suggested that more entertaining collective items should be added to promote the further development of track and field competition.
