With the coming of the information era and the flaming of the international communication,the English language has already made itself a very important and universally used language.At the same time,it is playing a more and more important role in the international stage.So every country is strengthening and reforming the English teaching in the senior middle school.Facing this new trend,our English teachers have been attempting every new possible teaching method and trying some experiments and research.In teaching English as a foreign language,the importance of culture teaching has been widely recognized. The present thesis stresses that culture teaching is essential in reading course of Senior Middle School.The teaching of language and the teaching of culture are of the same importance in English teaching.In traditional English teaching,language knowledge is paid too much attention to.Words, sentences and grammar are taken as the dominant factors.Usually,language learning seemed to have nothing to do with cultural elements of that particular language.English teachers neglect culture teaching in English classes.As a result,many students have learned a considerably large number of English words by heart and they can make grammatically correct sentences,but their actual communicative competence proves to be quite disappointing.That is why,in the real communicative situations,the students' "cultural mistakes" occur,which often form a very serious hurdle to intercultural communication.With the development of the foreign language teaching,we pay more and more attention to the culture teaching.People have realized that the foreign language teaching should involve in not only language teaching but also culture teaching.Language is the medium of culture. The English reading materials,which can be suitable for the senior middle school students, can perfectly combine the English language knowledge with the culture knowledge together. So the culture teaching in reading course of senior middle school can enhance students' ability of language effectively.Besides,paying attention to the intension and extension of English vocabulary can help students predict the content of the text and grasp the main idea of the text easily as well as quickly.It is useful to help the students enlarge their scope of knowledge, improve their cultural awareness and therefore improve their communicative competence by infiltrating the culture knowledge into English reading course of Senior Middle School.In this essay,it will use the results of the teaching experiment to emphasize the importance of the culture teaching in the reading course.In the first part,it will introduce the current situation of our reading course and culture teaching,and then present the importance of the combining of the reading course with culture teaching.In the second part,it will show the relationship between the language and culture,introduce the schema theory and the different research in the reading course and culture teaching both at home and abroad.In the third part,it will explain the process of the teaching experiment.In the forth part,it will fully discuss the results of the teaching experiment.In the last part,it will give some suggestions on the English reading course of senior middle school.
