The comparison study on textbooks is one of the most important fields in geography teaching research, most of which are specific, abundance and have been done for a long time, but the research scope is limited in textbooks published in Chinese mainland. There are little differences at the aspects of edting idea, values and difficulties, so it's hard to find the shortcomings at new angle and raise new perspectives and ideas. In addition, the researchers' s habitual thought and educational background are similar with the ideological system of the textbooks. It can not be easily avoided that the textbooks' design is influenced by the editors and writers' subjective factors.I choose two different textbooks for middle school students to compare, Geography for middle school students published by People' s Educatioal Press in Beijing and Exploring Geography published by Jing Kung Eductional Press in Hong Kong. Comparing these two textbooks, we can find the fine tradtions of Chinese mainland textbooks. Accordence with the situation of geography teaching in Chinese mainland, we can take advatange of the valuable experience from Hong Kong geography textbooks for middle school students, in order to improve the textbooks' edting and writing level in Chinese mainland. There are five chapters in this thesis. In Chapter 1, I compared the geography curriculum and textbooks in Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. The layout of Geography Curriculum and Assessment Guide in Hong Kong is different from that of Geography Curriculum Standard in Chinese mainland. The examination system on the textbooks in Chinese mainland is different from that in Hong Kong. The compiling fundamental in Chinese mainland is the political, guidance quality and three dimensions objectives. In Chapter 2, I compared the representation of these two series textbooks. Exploring Geography pay more attention to layout and use different types of items, while Geography for Middle School students do not focus on layout and just use unique items. In Chapter 3, I compared the content selective and organize. Exploring Geography just focus on several georaphy problems or issues, most of which concern students' daily life and are organised by features, but the contents of Exploring Geography are less than Georaphy for middle school students. In addtion, the sequences of them are opposite. One is "Hong Kong-China-World" , and the other is "World-China" .In Chapter 4, I discussed the contents design and statements. The main body of Exploring Geography axe several types and its photos are creatives and attractive. The questions desige of activities in that require students to answer questions one by one. They are all different from Geography for middle school students. At the end of this thesis, I summarize the fuction, orientation and difficulty of these two textbooks.I suggest how to compile and use the geography textbooks published in Chinese mainland. We should continue and develop those advantages, deal with the relationship between teaching and textbooks, mutiple the forms of textbooks, adding more social hot spot issues, create more different textbook styles for different students, which can impulse middle students to rediscovery geography.
