Character is an important means for the textbook writers to deliver the knowledge and show the content of education. Particularly in language education, the character is not only the sources students grasp the meaning of work and access to knowledge, but also is the role of example, which has a certain impact for the students to form life and values. Therefore, the textbook editor would be careful in the choice of arranging characters of various time, space, geography, race and identity into the textbooks based on specific criteria. For this reason, character in textbooks is an important element in the researcher of the value orientation of textbook.This paper, as the character to be the research object, makes a comparative study of values on the Mainland and Hong Kong primary school Chinese textbooks, and hopes for reference to the current reform of textbooks or textbooks using. The paper takes the primary Chinese textbooks published respectively by Beijing Normal University Publishing House (2003) and New Asia Publish House (2003) as an example. First of all, this paper draws on previous research results, which construct the framework of the research on comparing and analyzing the characters, including two parts: "external image" and "internal image". Then, the external image is divided into six categories: gender, age, age, country, nationality and occupation, to be compared by using frequency statistics for the frequency of their respective statistics, in order to compare and analyze the external characteristics in the two sets of textbooks. As the internal respect, the paper divides all figures into seven series: the ancient image, the modern image, the mortal image, the great image, the scientists' image, the writers' image and the female image. The article describes the characters from the ideological and moral, behavioral quality, the spirit of the characteristics. Finally, in order to examine the perspectives of two sets of textbooks in shaping aspects of characters to summarize the similarities and differences.The full text is divided into five sections: Introduction; Part I--theframework and technology of analyzing the characters of textbooks; Part II--thecompare of external image of the characters; Part III--the compare of inherentimage of the characters; Part IV--surveying the character-building overall.Through analysis of the above, the researcher found that both the commonality and differences exist in two sets of Chinese textbooks of Chinese Mainland and HongKong. The commonality of the two sets of textbooks is mainly the similar to the choice of figures' national (external image), as well as attention to China's traditional bias. The differences focus on four options: literalize and life, authenticity and ideological, modernity and tradition, adult and children animation trend. The selection of two states is based on their understanding of education as well as historical and cultural background.
