With the development of China's education, English teaching is valuing more the improvement of students' reading ability. The new Senior English Curriculum Standards indicates that the requirements in students' reading ability and the amount of reading are much higher than before and that the rich teaching resources such as audio-media, newspapers, magazines and the Internet should be made full use of to expand the methods of learning and using English. However, the traditional English reading teaching is confined to textbooks so that the improvement of students' reading ability is restricted to a certain degree.In the practical English teaching, teachers can make use of English newspapers, a valuable teaching resource, to organize and guide the students' newspaper reading activities in order to help improve their reading ability. The author believes that only when we "promote" the newspaper reading teaching, can we make full use of the newspaper resource.In the thesis, after a brief introduction to relevant theories such as Krashen's Input Hypothesis and Affective Filter Hypothesis, the author probes into the necessity of English newspaper reading teaching from the aspects of the requirements in the new Senior English Curriculum Standards, the present situation of Senior English teaching, the advantages of newspaper reading and so on. In the experiment, we put forward two newspaper reading teaching models built by the author herself on the basis of relevant theories and teaching practice. They are classroom newspaper reading teaching model and after-class autonomous newspaper reading model, whose aim is to "promote" the newspaper reading teaching. The former is mainly aimed at training students' cognitive strategy in newspaper reading, and in class the selected newspaper reading material and the well-designed tasks were used to develop the students' reading skills. It is the guarantee of the "quality". The latter is mainly intended to train their regulating and monitoring strategy in newspaper reading. We managed to develop the students' after-class autonomous reading ability by helping realize the importance of newspaper reading, opening a file (including a learner contract, reading notes and a learning log) and putting reading achievements on display. It is the guarantee of the "quantity". Based on the data analysis and the results of the experiment, it was proved that the hypotheses are correct: English newspaper reading teaching can improve students' reading ability; English newspaper reading training and the two teaching models are effective to "promote" English newspaper reading teaching.Finally, the author makes some suggestions for English newspaper reading teaching, such as how to choose suitable reading materials, how to design proper reading tasks and so on; and concludes some implications for English teaching, such as renewing teachers' beliefs in reading strategy training, cultivating students' autonomous learning ability and so on.
