Wei Shusheng is one of the most well-known contemporary educators in China.He has got lots of honorary titles,such as "National Excellent Class Teacher","National Ten Outstanding Young Persons","Superfine Teacher","National Model Worker," "National Outstanding Expert","May 1 Labor Medal Winner" and so on.Therefore,people consider him the "Contemporary Confucius ".His thought that is centered on democracy and science has broken the shackles of traditional thinking of education and done well in inspiring and inducing students to carry out self-education.Its value lies in that it makes students exert their initiative,enthusiasm and creativity.As a result,students can be all round developed in moral,intelligence and constitution.Wei Shusheng's thought of self-education plays a very important part in his educational theory.It contains three major aspects.The first one is the ideological self-education.That is to mainly cultivate people,emphasize the ideological self-education,guide the students to change and surpass themselves through motivation stimulating,life planning,as well as reading,writing,diaries keeping,mistake correcting and other ways.The second one is self-study in Chinese.That is to aim at learning to learn,guide students to draw "the tree of Chinese knowledge" according to the logic of knowledge and the cognitive laws in Chinese,self-study the teaching materials and other articles,mutually mark their compositions,arrange homework for themselves,compile exercises and test papers,as well as self-mark the test papers and so on.These activities can enhance students' abilities of self-study in Chinese,and cultivate their self-development.The third one is class self-management.That is to give the right of class management to students depending on the principles of democracy and science, cultivate their awareness of democracy and scientific attitude and achieve their self-education and self-management.Wei Shusheng's educational theory is extraordinary.Its rich contents on ideological self-education,deep thinking,and unique style have marked the further development of students' self-education.His theory enlarges the ranges not only in moral training,but also in self-learning in Chinese,class self-management and other aspects of education.Its rich connotation of self-education and outreached expansion has become the only and best way for the students to group up well and make progress.If students have the capacity of ideological self-education,it will be easier for them to establish lofty ideals, cultivate a strong will,have the courage to face their weakness,be good at analyzing their thoughts,constantly self-adjust and self-renew.If students have the ability of self-study in Chinese,they can enrich and even update their knowledge structure.This is helpful to rich students' feelings and to mature their thinking.In turn,it promotes the development of ability of ideological self-education.Wealthy knowledge,matured thoughts and rich spirit life can make students obey the class and school regulations more consciously,and easily maintain the order of class and honor.What's more,if students have the ability of class management,they can create a good learning environment easily.Wei Shusheng's theoretical contribution of self-education lies in the followings:It has taken the modern education theories and national education policies as a guide, widely absorbed the educational research results of both the ancients and moderns in China and abroad,revealed and respected the laws of education,creatively integrated his thoughts into education,teaching and the management practices,combined with the educational reform of our country at present stage,and explored an effective way of educating students,explicitly proposed the question of students' self-education with the source education,highlighted the position of students' self-education,further enriched the connotation of philosophy,pedagogy,psychology,and management,further embodied the thoughts of dialectical materialism and democratic education,as well as the spiritual essence of modern teaching theories,further promoted the education to returning to the natural station.Wei Shusheng's thought of self-education not only is a great valuable contribution to the educational theories,but also to carrying out the theme on the all-around development of students in the ways of what kinds of people to cultivate and how to cultivate,enhance the students' innovative spirit and practical abilities,deepen the reform of elementary education curriculum,improve the effectiveness of education and of teaching,but also is of great practical significance.Self-education of students will let the teachers extricate from the heavy daily teaching work,firmly believe that students have the internal needs and the tendency of self-improvement and self-perfection,firmly believe that every student can be created by the conviction and has the latent energy of self-education,as well as allow students to experience learning success and enjoyment,to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses in order to pave the way to realize the future value of their life,to enable the students to soberly maintain a life-long enthusiasm for study,self-understanding,self-adjustment and self-realization,to be a person that will truly benefit the society in the future.This is also the main reason why we concern about Wei Shusheng's thought of self-education today.
