| The Shaolin culture which has a history of 1500 years is the integration of Zen, martial art, medical science and art; it is the treasure of traditional Chinese culture. So far, Shaolin has been internationally recognized gradually, and has to face the challenge from the outside world.With plenty of literature and investigation as basis, the research chose the meaning and value of Shaolin martial art as object in order to make a modern survey. And with gathering the present situation, the research discussed questions like how to achieve better self value in the process of Shaolin martial art modernization in order to provide reference for sustainable development of traditional sports.The first section is an introduction; it expounds the reason and meaning of this research and the present research situation of this field.The second section is mainly about the definition of the concept"Shaolin martial art"with the basis of present martial art concept framework.The third section is a analysis of the meaning of Shaolin martial art form different angles. Through the analysis, the author points out that Shaolin martial art was formed by several ideologies and its meaning is a enormous technical framework, it can inherit till today was mainly because of its unique inheritance system.The fourth section expound the values of Shaolin martial art to modern society, the values include several different facets, such as healthy and well being, education, entertainment etc.The fifth section analyzes the dilemma of Shaolin martial art survival and development, and it explores the question of how to achieve the contemporary values of Shaolin martial art.The last section is about conclusions and suggestions.
