Body building, which aims at building stronger and healthier body, has gained more and more recognition for its specific value. Nowadays, "Optional Class" teaching method has been popularized in P.E. course in many universities, which lay good grounds for the development of body-building exercise. Furthermore, because of current students' bad physique, the necessity of spreading this exercise becomes more urgent. Therefore, entering 21st century, many average colleges have set up body building as one of the optional P.E. courses. However, as body building optional class is set up lately, the construction of this course is in grope, and relevant researches about the teaching and the training are few, so it really deserves more attention in the research of P.E. teaching.Through consulting references, conducting surveys, visiting and questioning and statistics, this paper intends to survey and research in the current teaching situation of the body-building course of the average colleges in our country, give an objective analysis and assessment of this teaching situation, and find out the factors that influence the sustaining development of the body-building course of these colleges, thus put forward some correspondent countermeasures, and offer some support for the current teaching reform of body-building course.The results show that: (1) the faculty of the body-building optional course is young, and most of them are of low technical job titles. This tends to lead to inexperience in its teachings and researches; (2) the teachers, who are engaged in body-building teaching, mostly majored in gymnastics, athletics or martial arts. They gain the knowledge of body building mainly through books and training, therefore, they really need to improve their professional standards; (3) students are actually interested in the body-building optional course, and their motives are clear, but the members in one class are too many, and few students participate in body-building exercise outside class due to the limits of places and equipments; (4) the teaching of the body-building optional course still adopts the traditional teaching methods, which are lagging behind the general progress of high education. Multimedia and other modern teaching equipments are seldom used and many good achievements of teaching experiments are not effectively popularized; (5) in the process of teaching, skills are attached too much importance to, and theories are ignored. Because practices are given more time while theories are given less, body-building class has become body training, and affects the improvement of the techniques and skills.As for the problems existing, this paper proposes the following countermeasures: reinforce the training of the faculty, improve their professional ability; pay more attention to the humanities environment, create the atmosphere of body building; increase the construction of the gyms, enhance the management; give prominence to body training in teaching, diverse the teaching methods; update the teaching concept and the way of assessment, etc.
