The establishment and application of the concept of "people-oriented" in PE teaching in higher education institutions has become an inevitable trend and also a demand of the times. The National PE Curriculum Guidelines for Higher Educational Schools released by MOE in 2002, specified the refinement of old sport events and the exploration of new sport events. As a novel sport event, self-defense is becoming increasingly popular with college students and has a bright prospect in colleges and universities with its qualities like practicality, body-building, recreation, etc. This study is based on related national directive documents, PE teaching research and the developing tide of PE as a curriculum both at home and abroad. In it relevant theories in fields of education, PE education, law, psychology are applied. With the use of documentation, questionnaires, logistic analysis as well as mathematical statistics, the study surveyed the status quo, the incumbent and potential faculty, students' expectations and evaluation system concerning the course of self-defense. The problems found in the study are probed into and countermeasures are offered in the hope of providing constructive aid for the prevailing of self-defense. The conclusions reached from the study are as follows:1. The current criminal law extends citizens' rights of self-defense and lessens the cognizance of excessive defense, signaling encouragement to their active struggle against severe criminal offences. College students, as a special social group, may encounter various forms of violence. Teaching them how to handle such crimes is all necessary. And the support of the government, qualified faculty together with the students' interest lay a solid foundation for the course of self-defense. The participants should also involve male students.2. Self-defense as an optional course is still not so popular in colleges and universities in Hubei Province. Problems to be settled include the shortage of up-to-date textbooks, absence of original teaching approaches, and the integration of teaching faculty, etc..In the light of the status quo of the course of self-defense, this thesis comes up with some countermeasures: cultivation of the awareness of self-defense and the concept of people-oriented; adequate and consistent funding, reinforcement of faculty training and academic exchanges; designing of practical programs to minimize the effects of adverse factors and to perfect the curriculum; revision of related teaching documents and compilation of high-quality textbooks; due application of actual-combat training and case analysis or spot imitation in response to the students' actual demands; establishment of a scientific evaluation system with emphasis on strengthening the students' bodies, picking up healthy body-building habits and acquiring utmost self-defense ability.
