Population distribution is the space manifestations of the population development, it is also an important part of the city development in different stages. In different stages of urban development, population distribution also showed different characteristics. The study on urban population distributions and characteristics of municipalities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing, analyzing its development stage to understand the laws of the population development in China's major cities will have a significant impact in the urban development planning, urban development strategies and the formulation of macro-control measures. Thus, studies on changes in population distribution among cities not only has theoretical value, but also has practical significance.Shanghai is far into the domain to promote the absolute phase of suburbanization. So far from1990, the degree of population suburbanization has been increasing, central city population continued to decline, the population at the edge of the district has been moving out, the peri-urban areas 's capacity to absorb of the population began to decline, the capacity of concentration of the outer zone has continued to increase. From the city's population distribution, the central urban area has a more uniform distribution of population and the situation of a high concentration of population has been eased, while the suburbs tend to focus on distribution, the population density has been increased, the city's population is more evenly distributed.Beijing is still in the last stage of absolute suburbanization. So far from 1990, the degree of population suburbanization has been increasing, rural population has spread to the extended peri-urban areas, but haven't reached the situation of Shanghai of which the population has spread to the outer areas. the population in the center district has decreased but the speed is not as fast as before; the ability of population concentration in marginal areas has been decreased; peri-urban areas' capacity of absorbing population has increased, the population growth in the outer areas is still slow. From the city's population distribution, the central urban area's population distribution is more uniform, the edge areas and rural areas tend to focus on population distribution, the city's overall trends is a uniform distribution.Chongqing has continued to push forward the process of urbanization. During the 1990s, a large number of population has moved into the city center of Chongqing City and the edge area, with rural population continued to move out, population distribution showed a significant center-accumulated situation. Since 2000, the overall increase of Chongqing's population is quite small, but the city remains in the process of regional population immigrating to the city center to increase the degree of urbanization. Population in the city center, in the marginal zone as well as the suburbs around the region has become more concentrated. The population distribution in Chongqing shows acentralized situation.Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin and Chongqing 4 cities are in different stages of population development, the characteristics of population distribution in urban areas are different from one to another, The main differences in urban development stage of these four cities are as follows: differences of economic level is the main reason of the differences in the stage of urban development. In the process of urban development, infrastructure construction provide the conditions for the spread of the population, such as the development of transportation increased people's the activity distance, urban renovation project further promoted the city's population's relocation, and real estate provides a large number of housing for the relocation population which is favorable to support the population suburbanization. Foreign population in promoting urban development also played a large role in Beijing and Shanghai, the non-native population continues to move in the outward of the city center which has accelerated the spread of urban development. Urban planning and the industrial structure adjustment will result in the change of population distribution in a short period of time, which is a direct driving force of urban development.
